This mapping of file extensions to mime types is all well and good, but it doesn t really support tasks you want to do with your typical desktop files, like printing PDFs or opening OpenOffice documents. That s where Mustang adds something new: the Desktop class, found in the java.awt package. The Desktop class has an enumeration of actions that may be supported for a file or URI: BROWSE, EDIT, MAIL, OPEN, and PRINT. On headless systems, a HeadlessException will be thrown. Where the operation isn t supported, an UnsupportedOperationException is thrown. To avoid the former exception, you can use the isHeadless() method to ask the GraphicsEnvironment if it is headless. To avoid the latter, you can use the isDesktopSupported() method to ask the Desktop class if it is supported before trying to acquire it.
